Bachelor of Performing Arts - Vocal (Indian Classical )

The Bachelor of Performing Arts (B.P.A.) in Indian Classical Vocal at the Institute of Music and Fine Arts, University of Kashmir, is a four-year degree rooted in the Hindustani classical tradition. Blending rigorous practical training with deep theoretical grounding, the course guides students from foundational concepts to advanced performance techniques. Students master ragas, taals, and forms like khayal, dhrupad, and bhajan, and music history.

Course Outline The B.P.A. program follows an annual structure over four years. Year 1 covers basics of Indian classical music—swar, taal, raga, and forms like khayal and bhajan. Year 2 advances raga theory, time concepts, and introduces forms like dhrupad and gazal. Year 3 deepens specialization, introducing complex ragas, improvisation (alap, taan), and Hindustani-Carnatic comparisons. Year 4 focuses on professional development, including voice culture, gharanas, and performance practice. Each year combines theory (notation systems, history, biographies) and practical training (singing, composition, stage demonstration). Students learn to develop and present a complete raga, culminating in a final recital that showcases mastery. The course balances tradition with creativity, nurturing confident, well-rounded classical vocalists.
